May 19, 2009 I Serve A Big God

Today’s Bible Reading: 1 Kings 4–5; 2 Chronicles 2; Psalm 101; 2 Thessalonians 3

Scripture Focus:

2 Chronicles 2:6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? Who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?

Observation:

Solomon began the great task of building the temple, a “house” for the Lord. It was a monumental job, requiring the import of cedar trees and craftsmanship from Tyre, but Solomon realized that the temple, grand as it would be, was merely a symbol. God was too big to be contained in a physical building. He was too big for the heavens (the sky) or the heaven of heavens (the universe).

Solomon realized that the temple was mainly for his benefit—it was a place to go to worship and sacrifice to the Lord his God.

Application:

It’s easy to put God in a box—my little box of understanding. I may think, “This is the way God is going to work,” or “I’ve figured out that if I do this, God will do such and such.”

But God refuses to be contained within the walls of my church or my mind. He’s much bigger than that. Sometimes I have to choose between the God I’ve imagined and the real God, who is much bigger. May I always choose the real God.

Prayer:

Abba Father, since you created the universe, you must dwell outside of it. Wow! This is the image I’ll carry around in my mind today. My Dad is bigger than YOUR dad!
