January 24, 2009 The Gospel Message

Today’s Bible Reading: Exodus 9–10; Luke 24

Scripture Focus:

Luke 24:46–47 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise[h] from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Observation:
Jesus capsulized the gospel with these words. The whole reason he came to earth and suffered as he did on the cross was to provide repentance and remission of sins. This is what Jesus says we should be preaching, not fluffy words that promise heaven without any sense of repentance.

Application:
When I talk to others about God, I must not sugar coat the gospel to simply be a way to get to heaven. We need a Savior because we have sinned—broken God’s righteous laws. May I never forget that this is the core of the gospel.

Prayer:
Abba Father, I’m grateful you went to the cross and rose from the dead to provide remission of sins for ME. May I gratefully share this message with others in need of a Savior.

January 12, 2009 Advancing God’s Kingdom

Bible Reading: Genesis 29 & 30; Luke 12

Scripture Focus:
Luke 12:31–32
But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things (your daily needs and clothing) shall be added to you. Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. vs 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Observation: It’s God’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom. All my life I’ve heard about seeking God’s kingdom first and that God would provide, but advancing the kingdom of God has always seemed hard, unattainable. What can I do to make any real effect on advancing God’s Kingdom?

It appears from this passage that our main responsibility is to give of our resources and ourselves and leave the results up to God.

Application: Stop trying to figure out how to advance God’s kingdom and start looking for how you can help people. God will take care of advancing his kingdom!

Prayer:
Abba Father, thank you for taking care of my needs. Teach me what it means to trust in you for my daily needs, and I pray for grace and the eyes to see where I can impact your Kingdom.
