October 30, 2009 Result of Belief

Today’s Bible Reading: Job 21; Mark 5, 6

Scripture Focus:

Mark 5:34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
Mark 5:36 “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
Mark 6:5–6 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief.
Mark 6:27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison.
Mark 6:50 “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
Mark 6:56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.

Observation:

Today I’ve listed a series of amazing events involving Jesus. Mostly the stories have happy endings, but they all involved faith in Jesus—belief. I don’t claim to understand how belief works, but I know that it’s a necessary ingredient to seeing and receiving great things from God.

It seems to me, though, that belief is not wishing. It’s faith in a person who really does have the power to grant my desire.

Sometimes belief lands you in a hot spot—like John the Baptist. He languished in prison and then was beheaded. We never know where our belief might ultimately take us, and we have to be willing to entertain the possibility of suffering or death, but most of the time belief enables us to do great things or accept great things—such as healing—from God.

Application:

Jesus says to me today, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Will I believe in his power to perform what I need in my life today, or will He marvel because of my unbelief?

Prayer:

Father God, I choose to believe in you today to be my complete and adequate source of life and power to fulfill the mission you’ve given me.

April 21, 2009 Am I willing?

Today’s Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 24; Psalm 57, 58; Matthew 8

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 8:2–3 And behold a leper came and worshiped Him saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean. Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

Observation:

Usually, the question we have is whether God is willing to heal us. That is certainly the question this leper had, and Jesus answered it for him by saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.”

However, I was struck this morning by another question that I must ask myself and answer first before I can ask Jesus if he’s willing to heal me. And here is the question: Am I willing to be healed?

When it comes to physical healing I’m always quite willing to be healed, but when it comes to emotional healing I don’t always recognize that I’m the one hanging on to the hurt.

Why would I hang on to the hurt when Jesus is willing to heal me? I’m not sure I fully know the answer to that question. Maybe I just don’t recognize that I’m really the one holding back. Maybe I want the person who hurt me to acknowledge his or her part before I’m willing to move on. Maybe I feel I can’t forgive myself for my part in precipitating the emotional hurt. Maybe I get some sort of masochistic pleasure out of reliving the hurtful scenario over and over.

I’m sure Satan would like me to use any one of those excuses as a reason for me to turn away from the Healer of my soul, but think of my loss at not hearing Jesus’ words in return, “I am willing; be cleansed.”

Application:

When emotional hurt goes past the point where it’s a healthy grieving, I have a choice to make. I can hang on to the hurt and never ask God if he’s willing to heal me, or I can decide I’m ready for healing and ask God the question that will set me free.

Prayer:

Abba Father, I’m so grateful for Jesus’ words to the leper, “I am willing, be cleansed.” I’m glad you also heal emotional hurts. I experienced your healing touch this morning. Thank you.

January 26, 2009 Divine Healing

Today’s Scripture Reading: Exodus 14–16; Acts 2

Scripture Focus:

Exodus 15:26 I am the LORD who heals you.

Observation:

God reveals one of his names in this verse: Physician or Healer. He does place a condition earlier in the verse: If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statues, I will put none of the diseases on you which i have brought on the Egyptians.

But the point that came home to me today is that healing is part of who God is—his nature. Healing comes in many ways, but certainly physical healing is one of them.

Application:

I just learned of one of my subscribers who found out she has cancer. This is a woman of faith who knows where she will go when she dies.

I always feel helpless when I hear of such things, and I AM helpless, but I trust in a God who isn’t helpless! At the core of his being he is the Healer. So I can ask him for healing for my sister in Christ. In fact, he invites me to ask.

Luke 11:9 So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you, seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Prayer:

Abba Father, Divine Healer, I’m asking today for healing for my sister in Christ. In Jesus Name, Amen.
