January 18, 2011 Characteristics of a Steward

Today’s Reading: Genesis 44–46; Luke 18

A steward does what his or her master asks.

Genesis 44: 1–2 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack. 2 Also put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain money.” So he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

A steward doesn’t operate on his or her own agenda, but follows the master’s instructions. There is a sense of authority and humility about a steward. This is a person who gets things done, but is not interested in personal glory.

All of us are stewards of what God has entrusted to us. What if we viewed our life and possessions that way? It would take away the need to strive. It would give us a different perspective—a healthier perspective, for sure. Just thinking that way today makes me feel calm, less anxious about my day. I’m am God’s steward. He has given me time and resources to accomplish the purpose for which I was born.

May I prove to be a faithful steward today, for the glory of my God and Master.

August 10, 2010 Don’t Procrastinate

Today’s Bible Reading: Jeremiah 5; Jeremiah 6; John 12 (The Message)

Scripture Focus:

John 12:47–48 “If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn’t take it seriously, I don’t reject him. I didn’t come to reject the world; I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I’m saying, is willfully choosing rejection.

Observation:

God does not reject people. He wants to save everyone, but he wants us to know that our procrastination is equal to willfully choosing to reject God. So whether I willfully reject God or simple put off making my decision, the end result is the same. I reject God’s offer of salvation.

Application:

This is an important thing to let people know who are considering the gospel. There is no guarantee they will have time to turn to God in the end.

May I always be one who does not put off the things of God—for I can procrastinate even after I accept Jesus. I can live life for myself, rather than choosing to walk daily following God’s direction.

Prayer:

Father God, here I am at the start of a brand new day. What would you like me to do?

July 2, 2010 Giving Back To God

Today’s Bible Reading: Isaiah 4; Isaiah 5; Psalm 115; Psalm 116; Jude 1 (The Message)

Scripture Focus:

Psalm 116: 12–15
What can I give back to God
for the blessings he’s poured out on me?

Oh, God, here I am, your servant,
your faithful servant: set me free for your service!
I’m ready to offer the thanksgiving sacrifice
and pray in the name of God.

Observation:

The Psalmist asks a very unusual question: What can I give back to God for the blessings he’s poured out on me? His answer is to present himself as God’s faithful servant whose request is to be set free for God’s service. Part of that service is to be thankful and pray in the name of God.

Application:

When I pray I’m usually asking God for something, so I’m intrigued with the Psalmist who asks, “What can I do for you, God?” Wow! I should be asking that more often!

Two of the “services” I can do for God are to express my thankfulness, and to pray. It’s much easier for me to read the Bible and go to church than to take the time to pray. Prayer is relational, something that doesn’t come naturally for me.

Can I be thankful in all circumstances today? That’s a tough one, too, but not impossible!

Prayer:

God, what can I do for you today? Hmmm. I think I know!
