June 2, 2009 Judgmental Attitude

Today’s Bible Reading: Proverbs 22–24; Romans 14

Scripture Focus:

Romans 14:10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

Observation:

The context of this verse on judging is believers disagreeing about disputable matters. Paul doesn’t want us to waste time judging a brother because he or she does something culturally that doesn’t fit our exact definition of what a Christian should do. Paul reminds us that our job isn’t to judge others. That’s God’s job. In fact, we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, so perhaps we should use our energy to make sure we are clear before God in our own conscience.

Paul wants us to have a non-judgmental attitude toward our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Application:

Even though this passage is about disputable matters, I find that a similar principle applies to non-disputable matters. Yes, God wants us to discern sin and to warn others, but the manner in which we do it must not be judgmental. All I have to do is think about standing before the Judge of all the earth myself and I immediately realize I have no room for arrogance.

Prayer:

Father God, Let me not think judgmental thoughts about my brothers and sisters in Christ. May I remember that I will stand before you someday and give an account.

May 31, 2009 Correct Thinking

Today’s Bible Reading: Proverbs 16–18; Romans 12

Scripture Focus:

Proverbs 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD,
And your thoughts will be established.
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Observation:

These verses from Proverbs and Romans have an interesting connection, which I can apply to my business, or any other “work.” The first step seems to be committing one’s works to the Lord, so if I commit my business to the Lord, my whole thought process changes. It’s no longer “my” business, but God’s. This totally changes the way I think about my business.

Romans adds another spin to this idea. As I renew my mind through the Word of God, I know better and better what God’s perfect will is for my business—or any other work.

Application:

Everything I do is spiritual in the way I “own” it and think about it. How much better to commit what I do to God from the outset. That will, in turn, establish correct thinking, and as I continue to renew my mind through the Word of God, I get a clearer and clearer picture of what God’s will is for me and the “work” I’m doing.

Prayer:

Abba Father, my business is your business. Establish my thoughts correctly, and help me continue to renew my mind to know better and better what your will is for me and my business.
